SquameScan 850C is a professional infrared densitometry stratum corneum mass tester developed by Labodorf, specially designed for laboratory tape stripping experiments of ex vivo/in vitro skin penetration research.

Driven by stricter global pharmaceutical & chemical regulatory requirements including EU REACH Regulation and China CDE IVRT/IVPT technical guidelines, skin absorption & transdermal drug delivery research has become mandatory for topical drug, cosmetic and toxicology evaluation. The stratum corneum (SC) acts as the rate-limiting barrier of human skin; tape stripping (TS) is the mainstream technique to analyze drug vertical distribution inside SC, yet researchers lack a standardized tool to judge stripping endpoint, calculate SC thickness and quantify removed corneocyte mass.

SquameScan 850C solves this pain point via 850nm circular infrared beam detection. It measures light attenuation within a 12.5mm diameter area on adhesive tape, correct blank tape background absorbance, then convert light loss percentage to corneocyte mass (μg/cm²) and corresponding stripped SC thickness (μm). The wide measuring area offsets uneven corneocyte distribution, while 850nm wavelength eliminates interference from active ingredient molecular absorption.

This compact desktop analyzer supports real-time monitoring of stratum corneum removal during tape stripping, helping lab technicians adjust stripping times and confirm the endpoint when over 95% SC is fully peeled off from porcine or human skin samples. All test data can be exported to computer via USB for lab document archiving and statistical modeling.
